The State Farm Champions Classic featuring four of the top basketball programs in the country—Michigan State, Duke, Kentucky, and Kansas—was held on November 15th, 2011 at Madison Square Garden.
The MSU Alumni Club of Greater NY joined the MSU Alumni Association at a reception to welcome the Spartan Basketball team to New York City the day before the game. More than 100 area Spartans attended the reception which was held at the Marriott Marquis in New York City.
The Club was honored to have President Lou Anna K. Simon and Vice President of Advancement, Bob Groves attend the event. MSU Basketball Coach, Tom Izzo was also in attendance and spoke about the state of the basketball team, the recent Carrier Classic game against North Carolina, and the up-coming game against Duke. Sparty, the world’s greatest mascot, joined in the festivities. As usual, Sparty was a crowd favorite, posing for pictures and signing autographs.
Prior to the game, more than 250 Spartans and Sparty, gathered at The Irish Times Pub to prepare to cheer for the Green and White. Michigan State had a difficult test going up against powerhouse Duke, who’s very own Mike Krzyzewski went for collegiate win #903, attempting to surpass his former coach and mentor, Bobby Knight. Sadly Duke and Coach K beat the Spartans in a hard-fought battle winning by only five points with a final score of 74 – 69.
The Greater NY Alumni Club and the MSU Alumni Association put on a great show of Spartan Spirit with everyone having a great time at all the events.
