Recap: 2014 Wine Tasting Dinner
Posted by Pat Donohue | May 12, 2014
Held in an elegant private room at Bobby Van’s Steakhouse, the 17th edition of our annual Wine Tasting and Scholarship Dinner was another memorable night for Spartans in New York. The group enjoyed reminiscing and networking with fellow Spartans over a four-course dinner, paired with red and white wine selections courtesy of Grgich Hills Estate and former alumni board member Bill McPharlin Jr. The Club’s signature event attracted alumni from all over the country to New York and proceeds benefitted the Greater New York Endowed Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance to graduating high school students wishing to attend Michigan State University.
Over 75 guests were welcomed with opening remarks from Greg Hauser, President of the MSU Alumni Club of Greater NY. A Distinguished Service Award plaque was presented to retiring board member Jason Slomack for his outstanding service to our alumni club. Bill McPharlin spoke of the history of Grgich Hills Estate and the wines being served.. The night’s featured speakers were Scott Westerman, Executive Director, MSU Alumni Association and fellow New Yorker, Dr. Denise Maybank, Ph.D., Vice President, Student Affairs and Services. In addition, past (Greg Hauser), current (Roni O’Connor), and future (Kelley Wall of Denver, Colorado) presidents of the MSU International Alumni Board were present.
In his typical spirited fashion, Club Vice President and auctioneer extraordinaire, Larry Alterman, led the annual scholarship benefit auction, which included: multiple signed MSU memorabilia, a dinner – theater experience, a Florida luxury condo golf vacation, a one week stay at a condo in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, a private wine tasting for 16, an MSU basketball game-day experience including a behind-the-scenes tour of the MSU Basketball Center, and a coveted item, Spartan Stadium tickets to the Michigan – Michigan State football game.
Proceeds from the auction benefit the Greater New York Endowed Scholarship Fund, which helps gifted students from the New York area attend MSU and become the next generation of leaders. The fund supports four current Spartan students.
