Recap: 2013 Wine Tasting Dinnner
Posted by Jason Slomack | May 21, 2013
Held for the first time in an elegant private room at Bobby Van’s Grill, the 16th edition of our annual Wine Tasting and Scholarship Dinner was a memorable night for Spartans in New York.
Seventy guests were welcomed with opening remarks from Greg Hauser, President of the MSU Alumni Club of Greater NY and just-named recipient of MSU’s Alumni Service Award. The night’s featured speaker and fellow New Yorker, Dr. Denise Maybank, Ph.D., Interim Vice President for Student Affairs and Services, gave her latest rousing speech in what has become a fan favorite among Big Apple Spartans.
To complement Bobby Van’s award-winning fare, guests were treated to five separate wine pairings chosen specifically for each course.
The highlight of the night was an impromptu saxophone solo by Tony Lustig (BA, MSU Jazz Studies; MA, Julliard), who was attending the dinner in between performances.
In his typical spirited fashion, Club Vice President Larry Alterman led the annual scholarship benefit auction which included: signed MSU memorabilia, Florida golf vacations, a private wine tasting, acclaimed designer furniture, and perhaps the most coveted items, Spartan Stadium tickets.
Proceeds from the auction benefit the Greater New York Endowed Scholarship Fund, which helps gifted students from the New York area attend MSU and become the next generation of leaders. The fund is now valued at over $145,000 and supports 4 current Spartan students.
The MSU Alumni Club of Greater New York thanks our Spartan friends who joined us for the 2013 Wine Tasting and Scholarship Dinner.
