Posted by admin | May 16, 2011
On Friday May 13th at Ben Benson’s Steakhouse, the MSU Alumni Club of Greater New York held its 13th Annual Wine Tasting Dinner to benefit the Greater New York Endowed Scholarship Fund. 72 Spartans attended the event, which included a four-course dinner with wine pairings chosen by previous Board member Bill McPharlin Jr. of the Rodney Strong Wine Estates. The dinner and auction raised $15,605 for our endowed scholarship fund, and another $5,600 for MSU Athletics, bringing the total amount raised during the event to $21,205.
Prior to dinner, a short cocktail reception was held allowing attendees to catch-up with old friends and make new acquaintances. An introduction and welcome from Gregory Hauser, President of the MSU Alumni Club of Greater New York, got the evening off to a great start. The Club was honored to have several attendees from Michigan State University in attendance including Douglas Estry, Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education, and Denise Maybank, Vice-President of Student Affairs and Services, who provided remarks about MSU campus news and insights into why events like our Wine Tasting Dinner are so important.
The event also included a live auction run by Larry Alterman, Vice-President of the MSU Alumni Club of Greater New York. Several great items were auctioned including bottles of wine, a private in-home wine dinner hosted by a sommelier, tickets to the 2011 MSU vs. UofM football game, an MSU basketball game-day experience including tickets and a behind-the-scenes tour of the Basketball Center, preferred seating for the MSU vs. UofM game watch parties at both Blondies and Mercury East, the ability to name your own menu item at Mercury East, as well as several gift certificates and other Spartan memorabilia.
Additionally, the first MSU Alumni Club of Greater New York Distinguished Service Award was presented to Robert McGee for his tremendous contributions and continued dedication to our Club. Congratulations to Bob, and thank you again for all your hard work and accomplishment.
The Wine Tasting Dinner is our Club’s annual signature event. This year’s dinner was another tremendous success and was enjoyed by all who attended. Most importantly, it helped continue to allow us, along with Michigan State University, to help students from the Greater New York area attend our beloved alma mater.
Thanks to everyone who attended the Wine Tasting Dinner, donated items, or helped to make this year’s event a wonderful evening. As an Alumni Club, we’re already looking forward to next year’s Dinner, and we’ll keep you informed about our plans and how you can join us in 2012.
