Tour the Bronx Zoo
June 23, 2012 @ 10:20 amFree + Zoo admission
In the immortal words of the New Yorkers Simon & Garfunkel: It’s All Happening at the Zoo!
What is mostly green and has 5,000 animals? Is it:
A) the Izzone
B) the uppermost reaches of MetLife Stadium during a Jets game
C) any given section of Lincoln Financial Field during an Eagles game
D) the nation’s largest in-city zoo, the New York Zoological Park, a/k/a the Bronx Zoo?
The answer is: well, find out by joining us in the Bronx on Saturday, June 23rd, for a day-length tour of one of New York City’s cultural crown jewels. The tour will be led by a Spartan alumnus with two MSU zoology degrees.
This tour is Free, but participants must pay their own zoo admission fees. Bring your own lunch or purchase food at the zoo. You should buy the Total Experience ticket. It is available on line at a discount in advance: https://tickets.wcs.org/mainstore.asp?vid=0&cid=1036
Directions & Where to Meet:
Meet at 10:20 AM the camel ride enclosure near the Wild Asia entrance at the southeast corner of the zoo. Call 646-286-6476 if you have issues that morning.
By subway, take the #2 or #5 train uptown to the Bronx, exit at West Farms Square/East Tremont Avenue and walk a couple of blocks north on Boston Road. Enter the zoo, head across the small plaza and bear right. The camel ride enclosure should be on your left.
By car, be sure to get there in time to enter right when the zoo opens at 10:00 a.m. For driving directions from various directions: http://www.bronxzoo.com/plan-your-trip/directions.aspx.
If you enter at the Bronx River Entrance, ask to go to Wild Asia Parking, in which case you’ll be very close and the camel ride enclosure should be ahead and a little to your right as you walk into the zoo. If Wild Asia parking isn’t yet open, park in the Bronx River lot and walk in past the World of Birds and keep going until you see the Wild Asia gate on your left. If you park in the Southern Boulevard lot, go past the Dancing Crane Café, past the Baboon Reserve and Lion Island, then curve around to the right. When that path ends, turn right, and the Wild Asia gate will be on your left.
Once you get to the Wild Asia gate, go down the stairs, and the camel ride enclosure is at the bottom. If you follow this link and scroll down, there is a link to the zoo map: http://www.bronxzoo.com/plan-your-trip.aspx. You will find the Camel Rides at the lower left hand corner. (Hint: increase the size to 75% or 100% to see better detail.)
